Research is where Research is spent to improve your crew in a variety of ways. This includes, but is not limited to, gaining Perks for your crew members, improving your Tokens, adding bonuses to successful Adventure Wheel spins, gaining Insight, and is the primary way you will increase your maximum capacity for Supplies for Expeditions.

Costs in Research increases with each Research Project unlocked and each Research Paper completed.

There are six Research Projects in the game, two of which are available from the start and four more become available after completing the second expedition. Each project contains an unlock bonus, five unique research papers, and a bonus for completing all research in a project.

Available from the beginning, Observations is focused on early game Research generation. Its completion bonus is suitable for any strategy.

Patch 10:
- Completely new Research trees. All trees have been replaced with new ones that allow more different strategies.
Patch 11:
- Lecture Expert no longer doubles Discovery, Secret and Treasure Hunt tokens.
Patch 12:
- 3rd and 4th tree of research significantly more expensive. This will allow you to actually OVER commit into science.
- Lowered the Renown Gain from the research masteries to 50% to reduce dependency on them.
- Scientist senses give +1 Study on a node of choice instead of +2.
- Writing History gives +1 Campaign token instead of +2.
- Apparatus Artists triggers on lvl 3 instead of lvl 2.
- Changed psychology a bit. (removed a research that gave Resolve?)
Patch 14:
- Research for end of 3rd tree and up is a little cheaper
- Laboratory changed -> German Laboratory: +2 Study when spending insight in Berlin (from +1 Study when spending Insight on Study)
- Science Assistance now give 2 insight (up from 1)
Patch 15:
- Finishing Observation now gives +50% renown from a resource (up from 33%)
- Writing History now gives +1 Campaign on entering an Encounter node, and +3 campaign on entering an Epic node. (changed from +2 Campaign when solving an Encounter with a chosen Attitude)
Patch 16:
- Finishing Anthropology gives 25 Renown per victory. (down from 50)
